Blue Eye: The Most Beautiful Water Spring in Albania.

You just can’t miss the Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kalter) while you are visiting the south of Albania (20 km/12 miles from Sarande). It’s truly magnificent, the clearest fresh water spring, river and lake I have ever seen in my life. It’s like a fairy tale. You might get the impression that you are admiring not a natural lake, but a huge aquarium. The water is so clear that the boats and water bikes seem to float on air. Click here to check out my full article about The Blue Eye with detailed description and photography.

Take a tour of the Blue Eye spring in Albania.. Discover why this is a must-visit and how to get there..

If you have already made up your mind to visit southern Albania, which has great summer holiday offers at more than affordable prices, then choices are plenty. You can go for the Sarande area, which has a variety of things for all ages, or Ksamil, a serene village with mellow atmosphere and many beautiful beaches. But one place you absolutely can not miss out on is the Blue Eye, a magnificent water spring.

Known locally as Syri and Kalter, this tremendous and extensive source of fresh water, often referred to by locals as the ‘blue hole’,  is beautiful, colorful, and unique.

Getting there is simple. You can choose a one-day tour with daily departures from Sarande, or you can rent a car and navigate via GPS. My recommendation, however, is to take a cab for 30 Euros, which will buy you a round trip transportation + two hours at the location (allows for a plenty of time to go sightseeing and grab a lunch).

As you travel towards the Blue Eye via winding, steep, uphill roads, you will pass through different landscapes; from palm trees on the shore, to green and dense, almost mountainous forest areas.

Once you reach the parking lot, there is a nice restaurant above the water where you can sample some of the local specialties.

A narrow path will take you first to crystal clear River Bistrica; a breathtaking site, that is not far from your final destination.
